As the count down begins for the end of school so does the count down to the completion of my project. Very tedious work is really all that is left for me to complete my project, so it should be done shortly in the next few weeks. Also, along the way I am learning many valuable lessons from my mentor, too. I plan to connect again with him this weekend and hopefully we can get some more work done.
With my Senior Project I have wielded some metal pieces onto the board to help it become more stable. Tomorrow and this coming Saturday I plan to further progress through my project with my mentor by building and putting together most of the other parts. I also hope to talk with my mentor some about which types of details can be done into the wood and what type of stain or varnish would be a good finish for the project.
This past Saturday and Sunday I started construction of my bedframe with my mentor. It is so fun and interesting to work with my mentor. He is showing me so many new, cool and interesting things, which is amazing. I have my parents come along and take pictures for me while I'm working. So far with my mentor we have cut a majority of the boards to length. We have also drilled a majority of the holes in the wood for the dowels that will connect everything together. We also assembled the headboard which looks cool. I can't wait to meet with my mentor again so we can continue our work on my project.
This past weekend, or should I say Sunday I made a trip to Mitchell to pick up my materials for my project. After all the thinking, I decided to go with solid oak for my wood of choice. While shopping I bought many other brackets, dowels, and glue for completing my project. After everything was paid for, my bill came out to be a little over three hundred dollars which isn't too bad. I will be starting construction on my project this coming weekend and hope to get a lot of steps in the process completed!
Recently I have been looking up what wood prices and materials cost for building my project. I am at the point where I am stumped right now, because I am not sure which hard wood to use to build my finished project. I have also talked with close friends and my mentor about which wood would work best but I am still confused at points. I have also been gathering tools along with the screws that I will use to keep my project together. My mentor and I have agreed to start construction of my project sometime after Christmas break is done!
Today I went and met with my mentor, Tom Peters. While I was at his house I had him sign the necessary papers needed to officially make him my mentor, which he was more than willing to do. I then discussed with him what I wanted to do in my project and the types of materials we would need to use. He was very helpful and is already guiding me to be a better craftsman of the trade that I am interested in. I can't wait to get this project started with Tom because I know it is going to be a great and fun time.
Recently on the twenty-fourth of October I was able to complete and hand in my research paper. This paper challenged me in so many ways. To me it was also an adventure that was so fun to do, I indeed learned so much from doing and completing this paper. I hope anyone who reads this paper that I have completed can also acquire a great interest in wood and all the ways that it helps us in life. Throughout doing this whole paper I learned many different things about wood that I did not know in the past, like how every civilization used them to their greatest capacity of use.
For our research paper, today is the day we get done with all our notecards. Then we move on to the hard part of making our rough drafts for our research papers. I myself have plenty of notecards and am more than ready to get this paper over, but at the same time nervous as ever about the whole thing. Again my research paper is about the history of woodworking.
So far of this fast senior year with my project and research paper I have been writing many notecards for the paper. I have also been putting much thought into my senior project about which wood I should use to build it. I'm on a bit of a shortened budget so I'm planning to make the necessary choices to make sure I stick to budget. I am going to either use a cherry or oak wood for the project. Also, with the senior paper I have only used three sources for notecards and need to use at least seven more. I am super excited about both my senior project and paper and can't wait to begin building in the coming months.
I have thought long and hard about what I have wanted to do for my senior project. My possible choices that I am considering are either an all wooden bedframe with etching and wood carving done to the headboard and base board and possibly the sides, too. If I'd have more spare time on my hands I might also consider putting wooden drawers on the bed frame, too. For this project I would be using some type of hard and heavy wood, either a cherry or oak, but I'm not completely sure what the cost would come out to be. I also have a pretty good idea of who my mentor could be, either Tom Peters or Dale Taylor. For my senior paper, I would like to write about the history of woodworking architecture and a specific producer of wood furniture over a specific period. I also had another senior project idea where I would shadow a coach or teacher and learn the skills that it would take to be a great and successful teacher/coach.
